A Leading U.S. Nonprofit - Mental Health America Launches Mental Health Month 2025

Mental Health America (MHA) launched Mental Health Month in 1949. Their aim is to increase understanding and education about mental health. MHA is the leading nonprofit in the U.S. focusing on the promotion of mental well-being. They work to prevent mental health issues before they start, identify those at risk early, and offer help to those in need. Mental health is viewed as essential to overall health. More information is available at MHAnational.org.

Mental Health America initiated Mental Health Month by releasing important data from their screenings.

✔ Screening Data Results: In 2024, over 5.9 million people used MHA’s online platform for mental health screenings. Among the U.S. participants, 78% had moderate to severe mental health symptoms.

✔ Depression Screening: Depression screenings (Picture an easy approach that involves filling out forms or having friendly discussions to find any possible signs and symptoms of depression.) were more common than ADHD screenings (A method used to check if someone, whether a child, teenager or adult, has symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) .

✔ Youth Mental Health Concerns: 40% of the individuals screened were under 18 years old. Nearly 50% of these young people frequently thought about suicide.

✔ Self-Image Issues: Among young people at risk, 61% struggled with low self-esteem, and 48% had concerns about their body image.

✔ Impact of Income on Mental Health: Lower-income individuals are more at risk for mental health problems. 82% of those earning under $20,000 were at risk, compared to 72% of those earning over $150,000.

✔ Mental Health Support Access: 60% of at-risk individuals had not received any treatment.

Resources and Guides: MHA offers free guides to help people improve mental health, with tips and information on legislative changes.

Spanish Resources: The book "Donde Empezar " the Spanish version of MHA’s "Where to Start" is available to support Spanish speakers.

The numbers show we urgently need better mental health policies and actions.
